The Michael E. McCarthy Scholarship Fund has been awarding scholarships to both Tiverton High School and Middletown High School graduates since 2005. Beginning in 2011, the fund will also endow a scholarship to Stonehill College. These scholarships are offered in memory of Mike McCarthy who was a hard-working student and enthusiastic sports fan. His family, his friends and the communities he touched have worked to remember Mike by encouraging students who share Mike’s special traits to further their education and to pursue their dreams. We do so by providing students with financial support and the message that they are well worth the investment.
Currently, five scholarships are awarded annually. Two seniors from Middletown High School and two from Tiverton High School receive awards. The first award is $2,000 for a student at each school and the second award is $500 for a student at each school. Stonehill College will grant $2,000 to a qualifying student in Mike’s memory. Mike graduated from Stonehill in 1999.
Application packets are made available to each high school in January and completed submissions are due in our PO Box on a designated date in April. The board of directors has named a selection committee to review applications and to recommend to the board its choices to receive the financial awards. These awards will be announced during the annual senior awards night scheduled by the two high schools. Financial awards will be distributed in the name of the student and the institute of higher education when proof of enrollment has been supplied to the scholarship committee.
The Stonehill College award is granted through the Stonehill financial aid office and will be determined by the guidelines in place at that institution.
Thank you for your interest in the Michael E. McCarthy Scholarship Fund. High school seniors interested in applying should check this site or their respective guidance offices in January 2012 for current application material. Stonehill College students should visit the college’s financial aid office for application guidelines.
